State reading association to honor Compton-Lilly, Cooperative Children’s Book Center

February 01, 2017

UW-Madison’s Catherine Compton-Lilly and the Cooperative Children’s Book Center will both be recognized by the Wisconsin State Reading Association at the 2017 WSRA Convention in Milwaukee on Feb. 9.

Compton-Lilly, a professor with the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, is receiving the Outstanding Service Award from the WSRA.

This award honors Compton-Lilly’s “internationally recognized literacy leadership” and her “generosity for giving her time and talents to WSRA,” writes Barb Novak, president of the Wisconsin State Reading Association.

Novak adds that Compton-Lilly’s “belief in educator expertise and the strengths of all learners and families has a significant impact on WSRA.”

The Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) is being awarded the Wisconsin State Reading Association’s President’s Award.

“CCBC’s work intersects with that of WSRA in several notable ways,” writes Novak. “You develop educator expertise by identifying texts that help young people understand themselves and others, and bringing these texts to the attention of adults. You engage in and promote research about diversity in books for young people. You advocate for intellectual freedom.”

The CCBC is a book examination and research center within UW-Madison's School of Education that serves pre-service and practicing teachers and librarians across Wisconsin.

“We were thrilled to get the news of this at the CCBC,” Kathleen T. Horning, director of the CCBC, says of receiving the President’s Award. “It’s always a great honor to be recognized by one’s peers, and to be recognized for the work we do every day is especially gratifying.”

Awards will be presented at the 2017 WSRA convention in Milwaukee during “A Celebration of Voices and Volunteers,” on Thursday evening, Feb. 9.
