Former School of Education Board of Visitors member Joe Gothard was named the new St. Paul Public Schools superintendent and was featured in an article from the StarTribune.
Gothard was a member of the School of Education’s Board of Visitors during the 2012-13 academic year. Gothard was an assistant superintendent with the Madison Metropolitan School District when he joined the board before leaving Madison in July 2013 to become superintendent of the Burnsville, Eagan and Savage School District in Minnesota.
The article describes one St. Paul Public Schools board member's comment that Gothard has the ability to unite people, bring the city together and act as a healer.
The StarTribune quotes Gothard: "At the heart of community are relationships." And when asked about the many issues facing the district, Gothard said he has never shied away from a challenge.
The article also details Gothard's racial background as the son of a white mother and black father, and how a teacher once helped him become proud of being a racial minority.
