Hillman speaks with WPR about measuring performance across UW System

April 21, 2017
UW-Madison's Nicholas Hillman recently spoke with Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) for a report about Gov. Scott Walker's proposed budget entailing UW System campuses to be evaluated by set performance standards.

Hillman told WPR that baseline measures for all campuses will lessen the impact of government funding, and having different standards for each campus would benefit both the UW System and the Legislature.

"Fundamentally, you want to design a system that is responsive to the unique missions and the unique priorities of the institution if you want this to actually make a difference on campuses," Hillman told WPR. "So, judging a campus for something that their mission isn't necessarily designed to do would be a little bit unfair."

Hillman is an associate professor with the School of Education's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis who researches higher education finance and policy. Hillman also is a faculty affiliate with UW-Madison's La Follette School of Public Affairs, and is a Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE) faculty affiliate.
