Arts in the School

The departments of Art and Dance and the Arts Institute have a significant impact on the arts on this campus and beyond. These units serve as some of the University’s best ambassadors, providing performances, exhibits, and other art experiences to people in Wisconsin and across the country.

Art is one of UW-Madison’s largest instructional programs, serving hundreds of the School’s students who major in art, as well as hundreds more students campuswide who select electives from nearly 100 art classes offered each semester.

Dance Department

Dance offers an interdisciplinary, rigorous undergraduate program in contemporary dance. In addition to its BFA and BS degree programs, the department offers certificates in Dance, Dance/Movement Therapy, and Pilates, as well as several popular elective dance classes to students campus-wide. Dance produces many outstanding performances each year and brings in prolific guest artists in residence to work with its students. The department was accredited by the National Association for Schools of Dance (NASD) in September 2013.

Theatre and Drama

Theatre and Drama is a collaborative community of artists and scholars whose faculty and staff are comprised of working professionals in both academic and creative areas. Coursework leads to both undergraduate and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Theatre. Students from across campus also regularly engage in both production and coursework to enhance their liberal arts education. This department joined the School of Education in July 2015.

The Institute – a collaborative initiative of the School of Education, the College of Letters and Science and the School of Human Ecology – integrates and fosters campus arts programs and serves as a resource to the campus and larger community, with programs such as its annual Wisconsin Film Festival and artist residencies.

Tandem is one of only three professional presses affiliated with a university in the United States. At Tandem, internationally renowned artists create editions of prints and interact with graduate and undergraduate students.
