SERP Eligibility and Deadlines

We consider applications from individuals who meet one or more of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Any full-time student- domestic – enrolled at any US university or college in the spring of 2024 semester is eligible to apply to SERP.
  • Have completed their sophomore or junior year at an accredited college or university. Students who will have graduated by the start of the program are not eligible.
  • Strong research interest in the education, health, and arts fields
  • Be a US citizen or permanent resident

SERP encourages students from all backgrounds to apply. This includes first-generation college students, those who have a background of overcoming disadvantages, or those residing in areas where undergraduate students’ research opportunities are not particularly available.

Important Documents

If you are interested in participating in the SERP for the summer of 2024, the rolling application process begins on November 1, 2023, and ends on February 15, 2024. There are eleven SROPs at UW-Madison, including the SERP in the School of Education, and all use the SROP application portal.

In the online application, students need to submit three written statements (each with a 3900 character limit) and upload relevant documents:

  1. Future Goals and Career Plans ​statement;
  2. Identify desired SERP Mentor/project;
  3. Research Area(s) statement; ​
  4. Research Experience description;
  5. Two signed letters of recommendations from faculty or staff members whom you have had as instructors and/or research mentors;
  6. Official transcript(s).  ​

You can save and return to the online application as many times as you need to complete the process before the final deadline. Your application will be submitted only after pressing the “submit” button. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Once SROP applications are submitted, SERP staff reviews applications and work with School of Education departments to match applicants.
