Despite challenges brought on by the pandemic, Impact 2030 has Dean Diana Hess excited for the future.

In an effort to bolster support for students experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 crisis, the UW–Madison School of Education established the Bridge to Success scholarship program. The first round of scholarships, for students taking Summer Term courses, supported 374 scholars. These scholarships were funded via a legacy gift to the School that was doubled utilizing Impact 2030 Morgridge Match funds. The program also received support from the UW–Madison Graduate School.

“Though some of our work related to study abroad, and international research and travel, isn’t currently allowed due to COVID-19 safety restrictions, bolstering our global engagement strategies remains an important aspect of Impact 2030 — and our commitment to providing transformational and innovative learning experiences for our students," says Dean Diana Hess. "These efforts are more important now than ever, and the Global Engagement Office will undoubtedly strengthen our historic emphasis on global connections.”

“Mom loved to read,” recalls George Affeldt Jr., who spent decades working as an educator. “We would come home from school and she would be reading.” He adds: “I gave the gift because of her love of books. ... She cared about the university and we thought she should be honored as well.”
