School of Education alumna Erika Dickerson-Despenza is a recipient of a 2022 Forward Award from the Wisconsin Alumni Association. An award-winning poet and playwright, Dickerson-Despenza says she writes with the Black, Queer, feminist lens, calling attention to how communities can organize to liberate Black women and girls around the globe.

School of Education alumnus David J. O’Connor is a recipient of a 2022 Forward Award from the Wisconsin Alumni Association. In his work as the American Indian Studies consultant at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, O’Connor trains educators about how to infuse their lessons with knowledge about First Nations’ histories, treaties, sovereignty, languages, and cultures.

Tony Award-winning actor and UW–Madison alumnus André De Shields paid a visit to his alma mater on his “day off” on Oct. 17 to see the new exhibit that honors him at Alumni Park. While on campus, he stopped by the Education Building to meet with Dean Diana Hess and School of Education faculty members across the arts.

A growing number of students from around campus are pursuing certificate programs offered by the School of Education in fields across the arts, health, and education. At the undergraduate level, 563 students were enrolled in six different certificate programs offered by the School in the fall of 2017. Five years later, in the fall of 2022, that number more than doubled to 1,206 students across 17 certificate programs offered through the School.
