Derrick Garth Jr.

Derrick Garth Jr. is a doctoral student in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, studying K–12 Leadership. He earned his B.S. in Psychology and M.Ed. in Student Affairs from Iowa State University.

Derrick’s research interests focus on the interactions and experiences of Black boys and Black men within K–12 systems. He is interested in the smaller, everyday interactions that can shape how Black boys and men experience school and the relationships that develop between Black boys and Black men within these spaces. Through his research, Derrick hopes to better understand these experiences and identify spaces for intervention that can lead to stronger support and opportunities for Black boys and men in schools.

Derrick’s interests are also shaped by his own experiences growing up in Iowa and his work with students. Outside of school, he enjoys fishing, watching sports, and spending time with family.
