Two faculty members at the UW–Madison School of Education have been named co-editors of the Journal of Research on Leadership Education (JRLE), one of the flagship journals in educational leadership research. 

Kevin Lawrence Henry, Jr. and Anjalé Welton will serve as co-editors of the peer-reviewed journal, which is associated with the University Council for Education Administration (UCEA). Henry and Welton are faculty in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. 

Henry says the co-editor roles will create more opportunities for UW–Madison faculty and students to engage with the journal and broader process of publishing scholarship.

“This will create opportunities for doctoral students and junior faculty to to gain direct exposure to the editorial process, peer review, and the field’s leading scholarship,” Henry said, noting doctoral student Will French will serve as managing editor of the publication as well. 

Henry is an associate professor whose research focuses on race, racism, and education policy and practice. His interdisciplinary scholarship investigates the politics of education, specifically privatization in education such as school choice/market-based approaches to education. Last year, Henry was honored as a 2025 Emerging Scholar by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education and was selected for induction into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College. His recent publications include the second edition of “Organizational Theory for Equity and Diversity.” 

Welton is the Rupple-Bascom Professor of Education. Her scholarship examines how educational leaders both dialogue about and address race and racism in their school communities. Her research also considers the role of student and community voice, leadership, and activism in education reform and transformation. Her book, “Anti-Racist Educational Leadership and Policy: Addressing Racism in Public Education,” has received multiple honors, including the Taylor and Francis “Outstanding New Textbook” Award in Behavioral Sciences and Education and the AESA Critic’s Choice Book Award. In 2024, Welton received the Linda C. Tillman Social and Racial Justice Award from the UCEA.
