NBC affiliate WMTV recently released a story about the UW–Madison Student Success Through Applied Research (SSTAR) Lab’s work to increase financial aid accessibility for Native students.

Nicholas Hillman, who is the director of the SSTAR Lab and a professor with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, spoke about the SSTAR Lab’s efforts.

“As a public institution guided by the Wisconsin Idea, it’s our responsibility to be part of the solution when it comes to reducing disparities in higher education, especially among Indigenous students,” Hillman told WMTV.

The SSTAR Lab, under Hillman’s direction, is conducting a multi-year project looking to make financial assistance information publicly available through a web tool. They hope to create a database in which programs, funding, and opportunities for Indigenous students can be searched and found.

“We are proud to be part of this work that will open doors for Native college-going students across the country,” Hillman said.
