UW-Madison alum Perrodin publishes new book on school safety in America

UW-Madison alum David Perrodin is the author of a newly released book, “School of Errors: Rethinking school safety in America.” Perrodin earned his Ph.D. from the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (ELPA) in 2016. A former school administrator, Perrodin challenges common school safety narratives in his new book. Perrodin tells the Portage Daily Register, “We’re not building systems that are accessible for kids. We’re just putting fortifications in.”

Alum Chávez-Moreno hired as assistant professor at UCLA

UW–Madison alumna Laura Chávez-Moreno was recently hired to become an assistant professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Chávez-Moreno, who earned her Ph.D. from the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 2018, will be joining UCLA’s César E. Chávez Chicana and Chicano Department in the fall of 2021. Chávez-Moreno will spend the next two years as a postdoctoral scholar at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.

UW–Madison alum Herzig named American Mathematical Society’s director of education

UW-Madison alumna Abbe Herzig has been named the inaugural director of education in the Division of Government Relations of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Herzig earned both her master’s (1999) and Ph.D. (2002) from the School of Education’s highly ranked Department of Curriculum and Instruction. According to this AMS news release, Herzig will oversee the AMS education portfolio, with a focus on undergraduate and graduate education in the mathematical sciences.

Alum Agyepong named assistant professor at New York University

UW–Madison alumna Mercy Agyepong accepted a position as an assistant professor of sociology of education at New York University. Agyepong, who earned her Ph.D. from the School of Education’s Department of Educational Policy Studies this past spring, will begin serving as a faculty member at NYU in September 2019. Her research examines the ways in which school context impacts perceptions and understandings of “Blackness” and “Africanness” in unique ways, with her dissertation titled, “Blackness and Africanness: Black West African immigrant students’ experiences in two New York City high schools.”

UW-Madison alum Kornblatt produces music video raising awareness of mental illness

UW-Madison alumnus Marc Kornblatt recently produced a music video for the song “I See You,” which was written in support of the National Alliance for Mental Health (NAMI). Kornblatt received his undergraduate degree in elementary education from UW-Madison’s School of Education in 2001. Kornblatt retired from the classroom following the 2014-15 academic year after a 16-year second career as a teacher. He now devotes his time to filmmaking.

UW-Madison alumnus David Perrodin presented at the July 3 Wednesday Night at the Lab (WN@TL) event, delivering a talk on the UW-Madison campus titled, "School safety in America: Rhetoric vs reality." Perrodin earned his Ph.D. from the School of Education's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (ELPA) in 2016. He is the author of the book "School of errors — rethinking school safety in America."

Morgridge fellow Jennifer Seelig focuses on rural schools’ place in community

Jennifer Seelig, the assistant director for the Rural Education Research and Implementation Center at the Wisconsin Center for Educational Research (WCER), has been selected as a member of the second cohort of Morgridge Fellows. In her research, this School of Education alumna and former high school Spanish teacher examines community values and how they affect schools.

UW-Madison’s Dempsey receives honorary degree from Western University

UW-Madison’s Jerry Dempsey, who is recognized as a leading authority on pulmonary physiology, received an honorary degree from Western University in his hometown of London, Ontario, Canada, on June 18. Dempsey, who earned his Ph.D. from the School of Education's Department of Kinesiology in 1966, remains actively involved with the unit.
