Glasgow art show features work by UW–Madison’s Baldacchino

Work by UW–Madison’s John Baldacchino is featured in an exhibition at the Transmission Gallery in Glasgow, Scotland, one of the country’s longest-standing artist-run galleries. Established in 1983, Transmission is known for supporting contemporary artists through workshops, events, residencies, and collaborations.
Baldacchino is a professor in the School of Education’s Art Department and an affiliate of the Department of Educational Policy Studies. His work explores art, philosophy, and education, with a particular focus on political theory and cultural critique.
Baldacchino joins Transmission for a live installation, exhibition, and dialogue from Oct. 20–23. As part of the duo exhibition, “A Week Out of Nowhere,” Baldacchino’s “The Nostalgia of the Present: Sketches of Belonging” investigates “the infinite possibilities by which, through art, we exit into the world.”
In “Nostalgia of the Present,” Baldacchino presents a loop of images along with sketches on paper. These images, text, and speech communicate “ungrounding, unlearning, indirectness, and autonomy.”
The exhibition will be presented alongside Jeremy Diggle’s “Walking on the Moon.” The program concludes with a reception and public symposium featuring both artists, hosted by Transmission Trustee John Donaldson, on Friday, Oct. 23.
