The UW–Madison School of Education is welcoming 16 new faculty members to campus during the upcoming 2020-21 academic year, which is one of the largest cohorts to sign on with the School since its founding in 1930. "We’re excited to welcome another group of exceptional scholars who will be working in fields as varied as the arts, health and education. They will bring a diverse set of viewpoints and experiences to our School as we build upon our excellence,” says School of Education Dean Diana Hess.

The Teacher Pledge provides financial support — including up to in-state tuition, fees, and testing certification costs — for students enrolled in one of the School’s teacher education programs. In return, after graduating the students “pledge” to teach for three or four years at a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school in Wisconsin. Students who go on to teach in a high-need district or in a high-need subject area will fulfill their obligation in three years, while all others will do so in four.

Zara González Hoang, a 2002 alumna of the School of Education's Art department, has written and illustrated a new picture book, titled “A New Kind of Wild.”

The University of Wisconsin–Madison plans to begin fall classes as scheduled on Sept. 2 and offer in-person instruction in many courses until the Thanksgiving recess, the university announced on Wednesday, June 17. The fellows were selected through a juried process to participate in the year-long learning community designed to further institutionalize and support community-engaged scholarship, defined as: teaching, research, and scholarly activities that are performed in equitable, mutually beneficial collaboration with communities to fulfill campus and community objectives.

Each May, the UW–Madison Division of the Arts celebrates artistic achievement, recognizes service to the arts, and supports arts research by bestowing the Awards in the Creative Arts. And once again, artists associated with the School of Education were recipients of these honors. Fred Stonehouse received the Creative Arts Award and Leslie Smith III was recognized with the Emily Mead Baldwin Award in the Creative Arts.

Multiple artists affiliated with UW-Madison were featured in a drive-thru exhibit at the Garver Feed Mill. The artists of this unique project include faculty members from the School of Education's Art Department in Aristotle Georgiades, Gail Simpson, and Helen Lee. The work of Art Department alumna Adriana Barrios (MFA ’19) is also featured, as is the work of MFA candidates Kayla Story and Kyle Herrera. The exhibit runs through May 31.

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the closure of physical spaces on the UW-Madison campus, third-year MFA student exhibitions were moved online. Though students are challenged to create without many resources, the Art Department reports that many are finding innovation and positivity out of this experience as they explore unknown territory.
