The UW–Madison School of Education’s Early Career Teaching Institute will host a public keynote address by Juliana Urtubey, the 2021 National Teacher of the Year, on Tuesday, July 26, at 4 p.m. Both the presentation and reception that follows are in Varsity Hall at Union South, and are free and open to the public. However, registration is required.

The UW–Madison Community Arts Collaboratory, housed in the School of Education’s office of Professional Learning and Community Education (PLACE), is the recipient of a $25,000 grant from the Madison Arts Commission through its “Artists at Work” subgrant program.

Three projects led by School of Education faculty and staff are among eight projects and 10 seed projects selected to receive grants from the Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment. These projects show the range of how UW–Madison faculty, staff, and students can collaborate with community members to co-create and share knowledge and solutions that will benefit and enrich the lives of the people of Wisconsin, the nation, and the world.

Four faculty from the School of Education are among the 32 extraordinary members of the UW–Madison faculty who have been honored during the last year with awards supported by the estate of professor, U.S. senator, and UW Regent William F. Vilas (1840-1908).

Two alumni of the UW–Madison School of Education — Laura Chávez-Moreno and Ashley Smith-Purviance — have been selected as 2022 National Academy of Education (NAEd)/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellows.

Two scholars with ties to the UW–Madison School of Education have been selected as 2022 National Academy of Education (NAEd)/Spencer Dissertation Fellows. Tyler Hook is a current graduate student in the Department of Educational Policy Studies, and Jessica Lee Stovall is an alumna of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Hook is the sixth student studying with the Department of Educational Policy Studies since 2020 to be named an NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellow. In 2021 Elizabeth Hauck and Rachel Johnson received these awards and in 2020 Qing Liu, Huimin Wang, and Choua Xiong were selected.

Diana Hess, dean of the School of Education, will become interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs on June 1. That's when Provost John Karl Scholz assumes the interim chancellor position. Hess will return to her dean role when Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin formally assumes her duties on August 4. Hess has announced that Adam Nelson, senior associate dean for academic programs, will serve as interim dean of the School of Education while she serves as interim provost.

Thirty-two UW–Madison faculty members, including four from the School of Education, were recently awarded fellowships from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE) for 2022-23.
