Masks. Hybrid learning. Physical distancing. Testing. The fall 2020 semester is kicking off — and at UW–Madison, it won’t be like any semester that’s come before. However, our School of Education students are just as bright, driven, and inspiring as always. Seventeen students shared their thoughts with us on majors, going to college amid COVID-19, what they are excited about this semester, and future plans.

With many schools remaining virtual this fall, there is a need for more physical education at home. Madison's local CBS affiliate, WISC-TV/Ch. 3, highlighted one valuable resource for parents who are looking for ways to keep their children active, developed by UW–Madison's Cindy Kuhrasch.

The Teacher Pledge provides financial support — including up to in-state tuition, fees, and testing certification costs — for students enrolled in one of the School’s teacher education programs. In return, after graduating the students “pledge” to teach for three or four years at a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school in Wisconsin. Students who go on to teach in a high-need district or in a high-need subject area will fulfill their obligation in three years, while all others will do so in four.

As part of the School’s Impact 2030 initiative, UW–Madison alumni Ginny and Mike Conway made a generous major gift to make sure the Adapted Fitness program will have dedicated space in the new UW Natatorium. The Conways are passionate about this program and their support, plus generous backing from the university, will assure there is a new, state-of-the-art Adapted Fitness space that will not only better serve clients from the community — but continue to provide incredible training and leadership experiences for students.

When high schools cut athletes from sports teams, it can be painful for those who didn’t make the team. But it also has wider implications, according to research from UW–Madison’s Mayrena Hernandez, a graduate student with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology.

Cindy Kuhrasch, a distinguished faculty associate in the Department of Kinesiology and the head of UW–Madison’s Physical Education Teacher Education program, is posting videos on Facebook to demonstrate safe, equipment-free physical activities for children during the pandemic.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison plans to begin fall classes as scheduled on Sept. 2 and offer in-person instruction in many courses until the Thanksgiving recess, the university announced on Wednesday, June 17. The fellows were selected through a juried process to participate in the year-long learning community designed to further institutionalize and support community-engaged scholarship, defined as: teaching, research, and scholarly activities that are performed in equitable, mutually beneficial collaboration with communities to fulfill campus and community objectives.

Kathleen Miller is a doctoral student with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and a predoctoral trainee in the UW Cardiovascular Research Center. The award recognized her first-author manuscript titled, “Age-Related Reductions in Cerebrovascular Reactivity Using 4D Flow MRI.” The article was published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience.
