Alum Yaghmaian honored with Oregon Counseling Association award

UW–Madison alumna Rana Yaghmaian has been honored with the Leona Tyler Award from the Oregon Counseling Association (ORCA). Yaghmaian earned her doctorate in rehabilitation psychology from the UW–Madison School of Education’s Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education.

UW–Madison alumna Kulkarni awarded AERA teacher education grant

UW–Madison alumna Saili S. Kulkarni was recently awarded a Re-envisioning Teaching and Teacher Education in the Shadow of the COVID-19 Pandemic (RTTE) grant from Division K (Teaching and Teacher Education) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

MMSD and UW–Madison form Early Literacy and Beyond Task Force

Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) and the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Education announced the formation of a joint Early Literacy and Beyond Task Force that will focus on analyzing the most promising approaches to teaching reading and making recommendations to MMSD and to teacher education programs at UW-Madison toward the goals of improving reading outcomes and reducing achievement gaps. The task force’s work will be focused on utilizing literacy — at every level — as an equity strategy to ensure all MMSD students receive high-quality, grade level accelerated instruction.

The Capital Times published an article reporting on the Oct. 29 symposium, “Addressing Inequities in School Policies, Policing, and Discipline Practices.” The symposium was the third event in the Real Talk for Real Change symposia series, hosted by the School of Education’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (OEDI) and of Professional Learning and Community Education (PLACE).

Special education teacher residency program supporting rural schools, UW–Madison students

An innovative program housed within UW–Madison’s School of Education is preparing future special education teachers to work in high-need and rural districts in Wisconsin. Within 14 months, students enrolled in the UW–Madison Special Education Teacher (UW–SET) Residency Program earn a master’s degree and Wisconsin teacher licensure in special education. Each graduate student takes part in a teaching residency in a partner school, gaining the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of students.
