Diana Hess, dean of the School of Education, will become interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs on June 1. That's when Provost John Karl Scholz assumes the interim chancellor position. Hess will return to her dean role when Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin formally assumes her duties on August 4. Hess has announced that Adam Nelson, senior associate dean for academic programs, will serve as interim dean of the School of Education while she serves as interim provost.

Thirty-two UW–Madison faculty members, including four from the School of Education, were recently awarded fellowships from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE) for 2022-23.

Tessa Michaelson Schmidt was recently named the next director of the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC), a library of UW–Madison’s School of Education. Schmidt will start in this role July 25, and will provide leadership and vision for the CCBC and its team of librarians.

UW–Madison’s Beth Fields, an assistant professor with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology, was recently awarded an American Occupational Therapy Foundation Early-Career Research Excellence Award.

A project with ties to the UW–Madison School of Education is one of seven that have been awarded 2022-23 Wisconsin Idea Fellowships. The winning proposal, by Siena Laws and Elizabeth Liu, aims to "promote mental health knowledge and create a sense of community at Madison East High School through the power of peer learning."

Mary Alice “Buff” Brennan, a longtime UW–Madison faculty member who dedicated her career to supporting and encouraging dance students, died on April 8, 2022. Brennan was a professor emerita in the School of Education’s Dance Department, where she was on the faculty from 1967 until her retirement in 2002.
