The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America) has selected Anthony Basso as UW–Madison’s SHAPE Major of the Year for 2024–2025. This award honors exemplary students majoring in physical education from across the country who meet high academic standards and demonstrate significant service to their school and community.

Basso was nominated by UW–Madison faculty and advisors for his strong academic record, community involvement, and unique life experiences that have shaped his approach to health and physical education.
Basso, who is pursuing a BS in physical education from the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology, previously earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in kinesiology from UW–Madison. His path to physical and health education was shaped by a life-changing health event.
During the COVID-19 pandemic Basso developed blood clots, one of which led to a serious brain embolism. His recovery required physical and occupational therapy. “I was in the hospital for a while, and I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do with my education,” he said.
This experience led Basso to shift his focus from fitness and return to school to earn his teaching certification. He now aspires to teach health and physical well-being, with an emphasis on inclusion.
Basso has been involved in volunteering with the Special Olympics, working with young athletes with disabilities. He has also served on the equity, climate, and inclusion committee for the Department of Kinesiology, where he helped create a workshop to guide faculty in producing more inclusive syllabi and assisted in organizing faculty trainings on LGBTQ+ inclusivity in the classroom.
Speaking of the award, Basso said, “I am extremely gratified to receive this honor. “It validates the hard work I have put in and motivates me to continue my efforts.”
