Department of Kinesiology offering new Athletic Healthcare certificate

A new UW–Madison certificate program aimed at undergraduate students with an interest in health care for active populations is now being offered by the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology.

Classes for the Athletic Healthcare certificate were first held this summer, with a full launch kicking off with the fall semester. The 14-credit program will provide students with specialized knowledge related to the fields of health care, sports, medicine, and physically active populations.

The combination of required core courses and elective options makes this certificate appealing to students from an array of backgrounds and majors. Students can select elective courses that will be applicable to a variety of career interests.

“Here in the Department of Kinesiology, we are very excited to offer the Athletic Healthcare certificate,” says Distinguished Clinical Professor Andrew Winterstein, who directs the university’s Athletic Training program and who will also oversee the new certificate. “This program will be of interest to a broad range of students with interests in the health sciences. We anticipate it will be attractive to students interested in medicine, athletic training, physical therapy, physician assistant, and many other health-related disciplines.”

Learning outcomes for the certificate include identifying the impact of public health policy on clinical practice in athletic health care, and differentiating specific roles of health care professions that comprise an interdisciplinary health care team.

“We have all learned in recent months the value of analyzing how public health policy impacts so many aspects of our daily life,” says Winterstein.
