UW–Madison student nationally honored as Major of the Year in physical education

The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America) honored UW–Madison student Paige Peloquin as a Major of the Year during the organization’s 138th National Convention and Expo, March 12-16 in Cleveland, Ohio. The award celebrates outstanding undergraduate students in the health, physical education, recreation, and dance professions who are nominated by a faculty advisor or professor.

Peloquin, who expects to graduate in May 2024 with a BS in physical education, was recognized on Thursday, March 14, during the Major of the Year ceremony.

“The outstanding achievements of future professionals like Paige are integral to the future of SHAPE America and our profession.” said SHAPE America President Sarah Benes.

Upon receiving her award, Peloquin stated, “I am so grateful to be recognized in this way and I cannot thank you all enough for your support throughout my time here. I really do feel humbled, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone for the nomination.”

“Paige is a uniquely qualified future PE Teacher,” said Cindy Kuhrasch, program director for the Physical Education Teacher Education program within the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology. “Besides possessing all of the required skills to teach motor skills, Paige incorporates opportunities for her students to improve their social and emotional skills as well.”

SHAPE America is the nation’s largest membership organization of health and physical education professionals. Since its founding in 1885, the organization has defined excellence in physical education, and its National Standards for K-12 Physical Education serve as the foundation for well-designed physical education programs across the country.
