UW-Madison’s Tim Gattenby received a certificate of appreciation from the Badger Battalion.
Gattenby is a distinguished faculty associate with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and the director of its adapted fitness and personal training program.
Gattenby was instrumental in opening a relationship between the Badger Battalion, the Department of Kinesiology, and its adapted fitness initiatives. Gattenby works to address the issue that 10 to 15 percent of people who want to join a branch of the armed services fail to meet minimum requirements to do so.
Not only does Gattenby help cadets meet these minimum requirements, but he also helps cadets and leaders alike understand lifelong health and reducing injuries. Part of Gattenby’s impact on Badger Battalion’s physical training has been personalizing training, allowing cadets to run circuits at their own pace to prevent injury and increase retention.
Gattenby points to the Battalion’s willingness to improve as part of this program’s success. He notes that the armed services are in the process of changing the standards and creating better testing and training methods.
He hopes that his partnership with the Badger Battalion will help set a better standard for physical training and testing in ROTC’s across the nation. Additionally, Gattenby hopes to expand the program to involve more students in the Department of Kinesiology to gain experience in physical training.
