UW–Madison’s Chell Parkins, the Arnhold Director of Dance Education in the School of Education’s Dance Department, has been honored by the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) with its 2024 Outstanding Emerging Dance Educator in Higher Education Award.
This national award recognizes educators in higher education who are early in their careers and are making significant contributions to the field of dance education.
Parkins expressed how meaningful the award was, particularly as it was supported by a letter and video testimonials from current and past students. “The ways that these students talk about the impact of my teaching on their experiences means so much to me,” Parkins said.
She noted that themes of building confidence and trust, and “becoming critically aware of what we traditionally prioritize in dance and why,” were central to her students’ reflections.
Since joining UW–Madison in 2022, Parkins has created and launched a new dance education certificate, which focuses on community-based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive pedagogical practices. Her career as a dance advocate, educator, and scholar spans more than three decades and includes a focus on the Latinx experience.
Parkins’ achievements were celebrated alongside leading figures in the field, including two of her mentors, at an awards ceremony in Seattle this past September.
