Crystal Stonewall, a UW–Madison School of Education alumna and current UW–Madison law student, has been honored by the State Bar of Wisconsin as a 2021 Outstanding Public Interest Law Student of the Year. Stonewall earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 2019.

The School of Education’s Diego Román and Lisa M. Barker are working on a project that aims to improve education for Latinx students in rural Wisconsin by training their teachers in how to engage English learners (ELs) in discussion about topics, such as water quality, that directly affect local communities. The project, titled “Teaching local socio-scientific issues to Latinx English learners,” is one of 15 chosen to receive grants through the through UW–Madison’s Understanding and Reducing Inequalities Initiative.

UW–Madison alumna Erin Schroeder is one of six Wisconsin educators named as finalists for the 2021 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Schroeder is a mathematics teacher at Waunakee Community High School, and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

UW–Madison’s Linn Posey-Maddox, Maxine McKinney de Royston, and Rachel A. Johnson are among the authors of an article published in the Harvard Educational Review that is titled, “No Choice is the ‘Right’ Choice: Black Parents’ Educational Decision-Making in Their Search for a ‘Good’ School.”

UW–Madison alumna Linda McNeil died on April 1 at the age of 77. She earned her PhD from the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 1977. McNeil was the co-founder and longtime director of Rice University’s Center for Education.

Through the generosity of Roland and Ruth Rockwell, the UW–Madison School of Education is pleased to offer four $1,000 awards to outstanding cooperating teachers. The Rockwell Awards recognize excellent teachers who have chosen to pass on their expertise by providing professional experiences for UW–Madison student teachers. Excelling both on the field of play and in the classroom, several students pursuing degrees within the School of Education were among the 68 UW–Madison student-athletes competing in winter sports who were named to the 2020-21 Academic All-Big Ten all-conference team.
