Call for proposals open for 2022 WIDA Annual Conference

The 2022 WIDA Annual Conference call for proposals is now open and invites interested individuals to submit a proposal. "Advancing Learning Together" is the title of this year's conference, and it will take place in Louisville, Kentucky, from Sep. 28-30. 

School of Education well represented at INEI webinar focused around literacy

Several individuals with ties to the UW–Madison School of Education were presenters at an INEI virtual webinar, “Language and Literacy Education: Cross-National Experiences,” that took place on Dec. 10. The webinar, hosted by the School of Education at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, invited faculty and graduate students from around the world to share their expertise and engage in discussions around literacy.

Apple, the John Bascom Professor Emeritus of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies, gave the opening keynote address on Sep. 27 at a conference honoring the centenary of the birth of the great critical educator Paulo Freire at Pontifical Catholic University in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

UW–Madison’s Claessens co-author of new observational study examining how kids experience kindergarten

Amy Claessens is a co-author of a new paper published in the Educational Researcher that utilizes classroom observations in a large urban school district to better examine kindergarten and kids’ experiences. Claessens is the Gulbrandsen Distinguished Chair in Early Education and an associate professor with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Policy Studies. She also is the associate director of the Center for Research on Early Childhood Education (CRECE).

School faculty and staff reunite at traditional ‘Welcome Back Bash’

It was a beautiful late summer day for members of the School of Education community — many used to seeing each other only in boxes on their computer screens — to reunite for the traditional Welcome Back Bash for faculty and staff, in the North Plaza of the Education Building overlooking Lake Mendota, on Thursday, Sept. 2. While enjoying a full tailgate lunch, and picking up T-shirts tagged with the phrase “Lead and Inspire,” attendees took a break from their workdays to catch up with colleagues and kick off the new school year.
