UW–Madison’s William Schrage, a professor of exercise physiology with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology, was recently awarded a five-year, $3.04 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Despite the difficult final weeks away from campus, members of the Class of 2020 look to the next chapter in their lives. Cecilia Rosborough is one such spring graduate, hoping to lead and inspire her community through a career in public health. Next week, she will graduate with a bachelor of science in kinesiology, as well as certificates in global health and leadership.

UW-Madison named student Shehrose Charania as its 2020 Newman Civic Fellow. Newman Civic Fellows are nominated by university presidents and chancellors for their potential for public leadership and commitment to finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Charania, an undergraduate student with the School of Education, was nominated by UW Chancellor Rebecca Blank for her commitment to fight health inequities that affect immigrant and refugee populations.

As the COVID-19 pandemic shuts down schools across the nation, many parents are concerned about keeping their children active without the help of physical education (PE) classes. But Cindy Kuhrasch, who oversees the School of Education’s physical education teacher education program, sees these new circumstances as an opportunity to bring back what’s missing in PE curriculums and in children’s lives.

UW-Madison’s Beth Fields is helping lead sessions of an upcoming series of events titled, “Preparing to Care.” A preview of the series notes: “No one is ever prepared to become a caregiver for a loved one diagnosed with dementia. This series is designed to help you prepare and plan for the future.” These events are being held on Wednesdays, March 18, 25, and April 1, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Madison Senior Center, 330 W. Mifflin St.

UW-Madison’s David Bell received the National Achievement Award for Athletic Trainers from the Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine Society (PRiSM). Bell is a national leader in examining the risks associated with sports specialization and youth athletics. He is an associate professor with the Department of Kinesiology's athletic training program, and director of the Wisconsin Injury in Sport Laboratory (WISL).

The benefits associated with staying active are widely understood, with physical activity being shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and depression, to name only a few.
