Researchers release free, at-home early math resources for families

A team of education researchers from across the country has pooled its expertise to develop the, “At-Home Early Math Learning Kit for Families.” Among those helping with the initiative is UW–Madison's Amy Claessens, who holds the Gulbrandsen Distinguished Chair in Early Childhood Education.

Nachman co-authors article published in College Student Affairs Journal

UW-Madison’s Brett Nachman co-authored an article published in the College Student Affairs Journal alongside Ryan Miller, of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Richmond Wynn, of the University of North Florida. Nachman is a Ph.D. student with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

Educational engineering games take stay-at-home kids to the next level

The best-laid plans of many parents are falling apart after two months of keeping their kids home during the COVID-19 pandemic — and for some families, Netflix binges and video games are replacing any attempts at home schooling. For four years, UW–Madison engineers and Field Day Lab game designers have developed options for productive screen time. And their educational — but, most importantly, fun — games aimed at middle and high schoolers are available for free on the Field Day Lab website and on the GameUp section of the educational website BrainPOP. Field Day is housed within the School of Education’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research.

UW-Madison Art Department: MFA shows move online

Though students are challenged to create without many resources, the Art Department reports that many are finding innovation and positivity out of this experience as they explore unknown territory.

‘Beats Empire’ simulation game moves hip-hop from fiction to online learning tool for middle school

Fans of the hip-hop television drama “Empire,” which abruptly ended its six-year run in April, and anyone interested in the music industry, can take a step closer to the realities of the music business by immersing themselves in a new and free online learning game, “Beats Empire.” University researchers from Columbia, UW–Madison, and Georgia Tech worked together to create the game, which places players in the roles of music producers who leverage data and analyze trends to dominate the music industry.

Class of 2020 spotlight: Winner combines passions for environment and human connection

Graduation is a time for reflection and celebration of many achievements –– and this year is no different. Carly Winner will graduate as part of the Class of 2020 with a double major in environmental studies and elementary education. However, Winner’s time as an undergraduate will continue until her student teaching field experience with the Madison Metropolitan School District finishes in June.
