UW–Madison alumna Giselle Martinez-Negrette has been honored with the 2024 Early Career Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE).
Martinez-Negrette, who earned her PhD from the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 2019, was recognized for her “commitment and promise via her actions, research, and service to the Latinx higher education community.”
Currently an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Martinez-Negrette’s research brings attention to the interplay of ethnic/racial considerations in language education while pointing to wider socio-political issues and representations of race in the U.S. Her work on language, mobility, and migration analyzes the impact that mobility, demographic changes, and ideologies have on the linguistic development, educational trajectories, and opportunities of linguistically diverse populations in American schools.
AAHHE is dedicated to enabling Hispanic professionals to fully participate in a diverse society. The national nonprofit organization works collaboratively with all sectors of education, business, industry, as well as community and professional organizations to enhance the educational aspirations and to meet the needs of a significantly increasing Hispanic population.
