Apple is the John Bascom Professor Emeritus of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies with the School of Education.

First published in 1979, his “Ideology and Curriculum” has informed the relationship of cultural and economic power in education. It has become widely recognized for its ground-breaking statements, celebrated as one of the most significant education books during the 20th century. One of Apple’s other titles, “Official Knowledge,” has also enjoyed wide recognition in the field.

Apple has updated his renowned book, adding a full chapter as well as a new preface. In the new chapter, he discusses the critical agenda of “Ideology and Curriculum” in terms of the contemporary conservative climate. Apple has also added reflections on some of his earlier arguments and offered some new developments on his ideas.

Much of his writing and research has been dedicated to achieving a more equitable society through education.

Meanwhile, in December Apple gave the opening keynote address on “Can Education Change Society?” at the Conference on Educacao e Resistencia at the Universidade Estadul do CEARA in Fortaleza, Brazil.
