Art Department alum named UW–Parkside artist in residence


UWMadison alumnus Roberto Torres Mata recently became the UWParkside College of Arts and Humanities’ first selection for their artist-in-residence program.

Mata is a printmaker who specializes in papermaking, installations, and sculpture inspired by Indigenous cultures in the Americas. He earned his MA and MFA from the School of Education’s Art Department.

Mata’s solo exhibition will be open to the public through Jan. 13 in the UWParkside Foundation Gallery. He has also been teaching an art class and hosting open studio hours at the UW–Parkside campus through the fall semester.

Mata recently won the Russell and Paula Panczenko MFA Prize (awarded annually by the UWMadison Art Department and Chazen Museum of Art), and had an exhibit at the Chazen Museum titled, “Untethered: Our Journey Beyond Borders,” which explored ideas of human and animal migration.
