UW–Madison’s Apple delivers keynote for conference in Brazil honoring Paulo Freire

UW–Madison’s Michael W. Apple gave the opening keynote address on Sep. 27 at a conference honoring the centenary of the birth of the great critical educator Paulo Freire at Pontifical Catholic University in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Apple is the John Bascom Professor Emeritus in the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction and Department of Educational Policy Studies.

Paulo Freire (1921-1997) was a Brazilian educator and philosopher, and was best known for his influential work “Pedagogy of the Oppressed,” one of the foundational texts of the critical pedagogy movement.

Apple will delivering additional keynote addresses honoring Freire in Argentina and Mexico.
