Work from UW-Madison artists featured in drive-thru exhibit

Multiple artists affiliated with UW-Madison were featured in a drive-thru exhibit at the Garver Feed Mill. The artists of this unique project include faculty members from the School of Education's Art Department in Aristotle Georgiades, Gail Simpson, and Helen Lee. The work of Art Department alumna Adriana Barrios (MFA ’19) is also featured, as is the work of MFA candidates Kayla Story and Kyle Herrera. The exhibit runs through May 31.

UW-Madison Art Department: MFA shows move online

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the closure of physical spaces on the UW-Madison campus, third-year MFA student exhibitions were moved online. Though students are challenged to create without many resources, the Art Department reports that many are finding innovation and positivity out of this experience as they explore unknown territory.

Raczek presents ‘COVID19 / Together,’ utilizing generative motion typography

UW-Madison’s Kendra Raczek, a student with the School of Education’s Art Department, has created a virtual exhibit on her website titled “COVID19 / Together.” This project came about during the class, "Art 448: Creative Coding for Graphic Design," taught by Assistant Professor Yeohyun Ahn. Raczek's work uses generative motion typography to capture the binary between fear of the COVID-19 virus and the healing power of togetherness.

School of Education’s Kaplan, Clark recognized with UW–Madison Hilldale Awards

David Kaplan and Laurie Beth Clark, both faculty members with the School of Education, were honored with UW–Madison Hilldale Awards for their distinguished contributions to research, teaching, and service. Each year, the Secretary of the Faculty recognizes four professors from across campus for these major awards, which have been given annually since the 1986-87 academic year. One faculty member each from the arts and humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and biological sciences is selected from nominations by department chairs. The winners are awarded $7,500.

Alumnae exhibition, ‘The Flowers are Burning…Oceans a Rising,’ goes digital

Earlier this year, UW-Madison alumnae Helen Klebesadel and Mary Kay Neumann announced that their collaboration, “The Flowers are Burning … Oceans a Rising: An Art and Climate Justice Exhibition,” would be shown in Middleton beginning April 16 as part of the Nelson Institute’s Earth Day @ 50 – Arts Initiative. Now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition is available digitally.

Ladoni releases powerful video exploring her journey to MFA exhibition, ‘Cheltikeh’

Maryam Ladoni, a photo-based artist who grew up in Iran and came to UW–Madison to pursue a master of fine arts, recently posted her MFA exhibition online and then shared a powerful video she produced that showcases her journey and the staged photography work that led “Cheltikeh.” A preview of Ladoni’s online MFA show explains: “My camera, which ironically this time is not in my hands, explores a multitude of answers in ‘Cheltikeh.’ The word means 40 pieces in Persian. It conceptually means infinity and the word for quilt as I see my life as a quilt of experiences.”

Pandemic can’t keep UW–Madison’s Pinc from bringing MFA show to public

Due to growing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this month, Guzzo Pinc's in-person MFA show and reception — scheduled for March 25 in Gallery 7 of the Humanities Building — was canceled. After the initial shock and a feeling of “despair” wore off, the graduate student with the school of Education's Art Department became determined to find a way to bring his exhibition — “EGGS: A Grand Scale Painting Comedy” — into public view. On March 25, he launched the exhibition online.
