Baldridge’s ‘Reclaiming Community’ receives a 2019 AESA Critics’ Choice Book Award

The new book, “Reclaiming Community: Race and the Uncertain Future of Youth Work,” from UW-Madison’s Bianca Baldridge is a 2019 American Educational Studies Association (AESA) Critics’ Choice Book Award winner. Baldridge is a sociologist of education and an assistant professor with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Policy Studies.

UW–Madison’s Apple receiving Educational Review’s 2018 Article of the Year Award

UW–Madison’s Michael Apple is receiving the 2018 Article of the Year Award from Educational Review. This honor is for his essay, “Rightist gains and critical scholarship,” which was published by the journal in January 2018. The award is selected by the national editorial board of the Educational Review. Apple, who is widely known for conducting groundbreaking work as one of the leading founders of the field of critical curriculum studies, is the John Bascom Professor Emeritus of Curriculum and Instruction, and Educational Policy Studies.

Alum Agyepong named assistant professor at New York University

UW–Madison alumna Mercy Agyepong accepted a position as an assistant professor of sociology of education at New York University. Agyepong, who earned her Ph.D. from the School of Education’s Department of Educational Policy Studies this past spring, will begin serving as a faculty member at NYU in September 2019. Her research examines the ways in which school context impacts perceptions and understandings of “Blackness” and “Africanness” in unique ways, with her dissertation titled, “Blackness and Africanness: Black West African immigrant students’ experiences in two New York City high schools.”

Morgridge fellow Jennifer Seelig focuses on rural schools’ place in community

Jennifer Seelig, the assistant director for the Rural Education Research and Implementation Center at the Wisconsin Center for Educational Research (WCER), has been selected as a member of the second cohort of Morgridge Fellows. In her research, this School of Education alumna and former high school Spanish teacher examines community values and how they affect schools.

Li-Ching Ho, Adam Nelson named co-directors of School’s Global Engagement Office

The UW–Madison School of Education has filled two crucial positions for its new Global Engagement Office by naming faculty members Li-Ching Ho and Adam Nelson as co-directors. Ho is an associate professor with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, while Nelson is a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor with the Department of Educational Policy Studies.

Higher education workshop collaboration with Peking University enters fifth year

UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank and Peking University President Hao Ping helped open a major conference on international higher education held in Beijing May 25-26. “The U.S. and China need each other,” Blank said in her opening remarks at the fifth Peking University-University of Wisconsin Workshop on Higher Education. “And our universities need each other." The School of Education’s Adam Nelson has helped organize this annual event each year since its inception in 2015.

UW-Madison’s Hirshberg, Rau, and Smith named NAEd/Spencer Fellows

The National Academy of Education (NAEd) announced the recipients of the 2019 NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral and Dissertation Fellowships, and this year three people with ties to UW-Madison’s School of Education are receiving these highly competitive awards. Matthew Hirshberg and Martina Rau were named NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellows, while Ashley Smith is receiving an NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship.
