Several individuals with ties to the UW–Madison School of Education were presenters at an International Network of Education Institutes (INEI) virtual webinar, “Language and Literacy Education: Cross-National Experiences,” that took place on Dec. 10.
The webinar, hosted by the School of Education at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, invited faculty and graduate students from around the world to share their expertise and engage in discussions around literacy.
The UW–Madison graduate students — and a recent alumna — who presented at the event include:
- Esther Bettney, a PhD candidate in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, who discussed “Decolonizing K-12 Pedagogies and Practices in Multilingual Schools”
- Jonathan Marina, a PhD candidate in the Department of Educational Policy Studies, presented on “Speaking Rights: Translanguaging and Integration in a Language Course for Adult Refugees in Uganda”
- Olayinka Olagbegi, who earned her PhD from the Department of Educational Policy Studies in 2021, discussed “Early Grade Literacy in Nigeria: Language Policy Dilemma among Teachers in Multilingual Settings.” Olagbedi is currently the outreach coordinator for UW–Madison’s African Studies Program.
- Antonella Pappolla, a PhD student in the Department of Educational Policy Studies, shared a talk that is titled, “We Don’t Start From a Remedial Perspective: Reflections around the Sponsorship of Academic Literacies in Public Universities of Argentina”
Lesley Bartlett, a professor in the Department of Educational Policy Studies, was also a presenter at the event. Her talk was titled, “Asking Sociocultural Questions about the ‘Science of Reading.’”
