UW–Madison alumnus Duane Knudson, a professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Texas State University, was elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology and was inducted at the academy’s annual meeting in Bellevue, Washington, on Sept. 14.

UW-Madison alum Alexander named next president of Oregon State University

UW–Madison alumnus F. King Alexander was recently named the new president of Oregon State University. Alexander earned his Ph.D. from the UW-Madison School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis in 1996. Alexander was previously serving as the president and chancellor of Louisiana State University.

Curt Mueller, founder of Mueller Sports Medicine and supporter of athletic training program, dies

UW-Madison alumnus Curt Mueller, who grew his Mueller Sports Medicine company into a global powerhouse, passed away in his sleep on Saturday, Oct., 19, according to this obituary. Mueller, a longtime supporter of the Wisconsin Badgers and the athletic training program within the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology, was 85 years old. He played basketball for the Badgers from 1954-56, and started Mueller Sports Medicine in the basement of his father's drugstore in Prairie du Sac in 1959.

‘Flow: The Art of Felipe and Carlos Eduardo Gacharná’ on display at Academic Staff Art Gallery

The work of the School of Education’s Felipe Gacharná and his brother, Carlos Eduardo Gacharná, is being showcased in the Academic Staff Art Gallery in Bascom Hall. Their photography series is titled, “Flow: The Art of Felipe and Carlos Eduardo Gacharná.” An opening reception is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 14, from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. The Academic Staff Art Gallery is housed in room 270 of Bascom Hall.

‘Radical Pedagogy’ exhibition opens Oct. 11 in new Lathrop Gallery Space

UW–Madison’s Dance Department is opening a stunning permanent exhibition in Lathrop Hall’s new Gallery Space titled, “Radical Pedagogy: Margaret H’Doubler, Anna Halprin, and American Dance, 1916-Present.” The exhibition was made possible via a generous donation from Jody Gottfried Arnhold ('65) and John Arnhold. The photographs, visual art, and films that fill Lathrop’s Gallery Space bear witness to dance pioneer Margaret H’Doubler’s radical pedagogy and its inherently Midwestern progressivism — when dance became a rigorous academic discipline and the body became the route to scientific inquiry, self-discovery, creativity, and citizenship.

Alum Thorson selected by Knowles Teacher Initiative as a 2019 Teaching Fellow

UW-Madison alumna and Ripon High School chemistry teacher Rachel Thorson was recently selected by the Knowles Teacher Initiative as a member of its 2019 cohort of Teaching Fellows. Thorson earned a master of science in curriculum and instruction from the School of Education in 2018. Teachers like Thorson are chosen for their commitment to collaborative, innovative leadership and improving education for all students.

Conways create two funds to support School of Education

UW-Madison alumni Virginia "Ginny" Conway and Michael Conway recently created two funds in support of the School of Education, one with the Department of Kinesiology's Adapted Fitness Program and the other in the Dance Department. Virginia Conway received a degree in physical education from the School of Education in 1978, while Michael Conway received his degree from UW-Madison’s Department of Engineering in 1978.
