The dean of the UW–Madison School of Education will moderate a panel at the Cap Times Idea Fest next week, guiding panelists as they discuss how philanthropy and public-private partnership could play a vital role in the future of public schools in Madison. 

The discussion, “Can Madison get this right? Schools, talent, and our city’s future,” will be held on Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Madison College’s Goodman campus. Panelists will be:

• Maggie Brickerman, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council 
• Mo Cheeks, president of the Madison Public Schools Foundation  
• Joe Gothard, superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District 
• Beth Giles-Klinkner, provost at Madison College

Marcelle Haddix, dean of the School of Education, will moderate the panel. The discussion will address how Madison public schools plan to accommodate the area’s rapid population growth.

In addition to serving as the 10th dean of the No. 1-ranked School of Education, Haddix holds the Karen A. Falk Distinguished Chair of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and is a leading scholar in literacy and teacher education, with a particular focus on the experiences of students and teachers of color. Her book, “Cultivating Racial and Linguistic Diversity in Literacy Teacher Education: Teachers Like Me,” received the 2018 Outstanding Book Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.

The panel discussion is one of the free sessions offered by the Cap Times Idea Fest, but online registration is required to attend.
