Q-A with visiting Fulbright TEA participant: Özcan Çiçek from Turkey

The UW–Madison School of Education hosted 21 secondary-level educators from abroad again this fall as part of the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement (Fulbright TEA) program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by IREX.

These teachers came to Madison from 17 different countries across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. They arrived in Madison on Sept. 13, and left town on Oct. 30 for a three-day conference in Washington, D.C., before heading home.

While spending time on campus and around the Madison area, the visiting educators took part in an academic program focused on media literacy, technology, contemporary issues in education, and language pedagogy.

The program included a field experience component at either Monona Grove High School or Verona Area High School. The group also enjoyed some fun activities, like touring the Wisconsin State Capitol and checking out the Dane County Farmers’ Market, taking in a Badgers football game, visiting Chicago, and attending the School of Education’s Homecoming Tailgate event Oct. 7 at Union South.

What is one thing you learned during your time in Madison that you hope to take back home and be able to implement it in your classroom and country? One invaluable lesson I’ve learned during my time in Madison, and I’m eager to bring back to my classroom and country, is the multifaceted approach to education that I’ve encountered here. The exposure to innovative approaches and methodologies, particularly in the realm of education, has been transformative.

One aspect that stands out is media literacy. In an era where information is abundant and easily accessible, understanding how to critically evaluate and navigate the media landscape is crucial. I’ve gained insights into the importance of media literacy in a world inundated with information, and I hope to impart this critical skill to my students. Equipping them with the ability to discern reliable sources, critically analyze media content, and think critically about the information they consume is vital for their development as informed and responsible global citizens.

Technology integration is another key takeaway. Madison’s emphasis on integrating technology effectively into the learning process has been enlightening. I’ve seen firsthand how technology can enhance and personalize education. I intend to leverage these insights to make learning more engaging and accessible for my students back home. By incorporating technology thoughtfully, I hope to create a dynamic and interactive learning environment that caters to individual learning styles.

The focus on social justice and equity has been another profound learning experience. The commitment to creating an inclusive and just educational system here has been inspiring. I want to ensure that these principles are embedded in my teaching approach, promoting diversity, inclusivity, and social justice in my classroom. By addressing issues of equity and fairness, I aim to contribute to a more equitable society and empower my students to advocate for social change.

In summary, the blend of media literacy, technology integration, and a deep commitment to social justice and equity that I’ve encountered in Madison has profoundly impacted my perspective on education. What did you know about Wisconsin and the United States before coming to Madison? And how, if at all, have your perceptions changed about this state or the U.S.? Before coming to Madison, I had a general understanding of Wisconsin and the United States, but my experiences here have certainly deepened and broadened my perceptions.

I knew that Wisconsin was famous for its dairy products, and the image of picturesque farms and dairy cows was a prevalent one. Wisconsin’s excellent universities, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, were also well-known. Additionally, I was aware that Wisconsin had a rich history, particularly as a place of significance for Native Americans in ancient times.

I had some preconceived notions about the United States as a whole, which included ideas about freedom, kindness, and a sociable environment. I was aware of the American value placed on individual freedom and the perception of Americans as friendly and outgoing people.

However, my time in Madison has allowed me to experience and appreciate these aspects in a more profound way. I’ve been deeply impressed by the extent of personal freedom and the kindness and politeness of the people I’ve encountered. The warmth and openness of the community here have been even more welcoming than I had anticipated. The genuine politeness and friendliness of the people have made me feel at home.

On the other hand, my experiences have also shed light on some challenges, such as the issue of homelessness, which I was less aware of before. The presence of homeless individuals in the community has been an eye-opening experience, highlighting the complex social issues that exist even in developed countries.

In summary, my time in Madison has expanded my understanding of Wisconsin and the United States, revealing the depth of the values of freedom and kindness, while also bringing to the forefront certain societal challenges. It has been a journey of cultural discovery and a testament to the complex and multifaceted nature of any society.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself or this experience? There are several more aspects of my experience in Madison that I’d like to share. One of the most striking revelations has been the exceptional degree of freedom, especially for LGBTQ individuals. The acceptance and support for LGBTQ rights and lifestyles have been a significant eye-opener. It’s heartening to witness the progress in this area and to see how inclusivity is actively embraced within the community.

Physical well-being is a clear priority here. I’ve noticed that a majority of young people engage in sports, be it jogging, running, or gym workouts. The commitment to a healthy lifestyle is evident, and it’s inspiring to witness such a dedication to fitness and well-being.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that a significant portion of the population refrains from smoking, which has created a healthier and cleaner environment. This focus on health has a tangible impact on the quality of life.

The spirit surrounding American football matches is something truly unique. The passion and enthusiasm that people of all ages bring to these games are a testament to the city’s spirit and ambition. The way families, children, young, and old alike come together to enjoy matches and celebrate afterward in bars and clubs is a reflection of the sense of community that Madison embodies.

The kindness and helpfulness of the people here have been consistently heartwarming. Whether it’s on a bus or in everyday interactions, the courtesy and willingness to assist others are truly commendable. The simple acts of saying “Thank you” and speaking kindly make daily life all the more pleasant.

On the flip side, I’ve also come to understand that there is much work to be done in terms of addressing the challenges and disparities faced by Native Americans, Indigenous people, and other minorities. These communities continue to encounter significant hurdles, and it is essential that we work toward greater equality and social justice for all.

In conclusion, my time in Madison has been a journey of profound discoveries, offering insights into the vibrant spirit of the community, the emphasis on personal well-being, the acceptance of diversity, and the need for ongoing efforts to address inequalities faced by marginalized communities. It’s been an experience that has expanded my perspective on various aspects of life and society.
