UW–Madison’s Apple gives multiple international addresses on defending democratic education


UW–Madison’s Michael Apple over the past several months has delivered multiple presentations across the world about his work defending democratic education.

Apple is the John Basom Professor Emeritus with the School of Education’s Departments of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies.

The presentations include:

  • “Can Education Change Society? Lessons to be Learned,” at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on Aug. 14
  • “The Future of Schools and the Schools of the Future: Facing Realities I,” at the Pontifical University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on Aug. 15
  • “The Future of Schools and the Schools of the Future: Facing Realities II,” at the Pontifical University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on Aug. 16
  • “A Plenary Conversation with Michael W. Apple,” at the International Seminar on Education Policy and Education Practice in Norway, on Aug. 31
  • “Can Education Change Society? Lessons to Be Learned,” at the Pedagogical University of Sinaloa, Mexico, on Nov. 21

Apple is the author of a number of books including, “Can Education Change Society?” and “The Struggle for Democracy in Education: Lessons from Social Realities.” In his work, Apple looks at national and international movements for increased democratic schooling, and the influence of rightist populist groups that have focused much of their attention on educational policies and practices.
