New book edited by UW–Madison’s Apple explores where education and politics collide

UW–Madison’s Michael Apple, the John Bascom Professor Emeritus of Curriculum and Instruction, is editor of a new book titled, “Education and the Politics of Interruption: Does the Right Always Win?” The book, which Apple co-edited with Iana Gomes De Lima and Luis Armando Gandin, will be published this month by Routledge.

The book explores how education has become a key battleground in global political struggles. It traces the growing tensions between authoritarian coalitions and progressive educational and social movements, highlighting how governments, schools, educators, communities, and parents have been drawn into these conflicts — and how democratic alliances and organizations are pushing back.

Apple describes the project as an “ambitious national and international project that critically examines the realities, limits, and possibilities of more democratic educational policies and practices.” The book offers essential insights for students, scholars, and educators in critical and comparative education, curriculum studies, sociology in education, social justice, and education policy.

Apple currently serves as a Visiting Distinguished Professor at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

“Education and the Politics of Interruption” is currently available for preorder.
