American Theatre features UW–Madison’s Espinosa and Latinx Actor-Training Laboratorio

UW–Madison’s Micha Espinosa was recently featured in an American Theatre article highlighting the Latinx Theatre Commons Actor-Training Laboratorio, held March 27–30 on the UW–Madison campus.

Espinosa

Espinosa, a professor in the School of Education’s Department of Theatre and Drama, is a longtime leader in the development of Latinx actor training methodologies. The story examines the Laboratorio as a dedicated space for Latine performers, faculty, and scholars to explore actor training rooted in authenticity, specificity, and cultural knowledge.

The story also connects the event’s work to “Latinx Actor Training,” a volume co-edited by Espinosa and Cynthia Santos DeCure, noting that the Laboratorio put many of the book’s ideas into practice. It highlights Espinosa and DeCure’s sustained collaboration and their shared goal of transforming how Latine artists are trained in theatre spaces.

Reflecting on the impact of the Laboratorio, Espinosa said, “This was a space of gathering, replenishing, and reimagining what becomes possible when Latinx artists are centered in the room. To see it come to fruition was deeply moving, and it also feels clear that this is just the beginning.”
