Following is a Q&A with Lily Bauer, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and graduating in spring 2025.

What grades/subjects would you like to teach?
I am most interested in teaching lower elementary! As of now, I think 1st–3rd grade is where I want to be.
Why did you pursue your teaching certification through UW–Madison?
I have wanted to attend UW–Madison ever since I first visited the campus with my older sister in elementary school. As it became time for me to apply to schools and decide where I wanted to pursue my degree, UW–Madison remained the obvious choice. With a top-ranked School of Education both nationally and internationally, I knew I would be learning from the best of the best.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
As soon as I learned what school was, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I feel so fortunate and excited to be so close to making my lifelong dream come true. My mom is an educator and I have been surrounded by strong and passionate educators my whole life who have continued to support me.
What has been your most meaningful learning experience — or who was the most impactful instructor — during your time in your program, and why?
My most meaningful learning experiences during my time in the program have always happened in my field placements. However, those experiences would not have been possible without the work of my thoughtful professor, Kerry Kretchmar. She cares so deeply about each of us as people and does everything she can to support our development as teachers. Knowing this about her, I am able to wholeheartedly trust that she has my best interest in mind when making placement decisions and I have not been disappointed!

What impact did connections or friendships with fellow students in your program have on your learning?
My cohort has been so instrumental to my success in this program. Learning and reflecting alongside some of my closest friends has only made me a better teacher. Teaching is hard work and finding your people early on who think similarly to you and are experiencing the same things you are is so important for feeling supported in this work.
What role did the Teacher Pledge play in your decision to come to UW–Madison?
I had heard of the Teacher Pledge before coming to UW–Madison but I was already committed. Learning about it was an added bonus!
How has the Teacher Pledge helped you in pursuing your goal of becoming a teacher?
The Teacher Pledge has taken a lot of the financial burden of paying for my degree. Now, I am able to save the money I would have spent on my undergraduate degree for a master’s degree! The Teacher Pledge has opened up continued learning opportunities for me.
