Rebecca M. Blank, an economist and educator who served in high-level U.S. government and academic positions and, for nine years, as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, died of cancer on Friday, Feb. 17 near Madison. She was 67.
“Chancellor Blank was a brilliant and pragmatic leader whose impact on this campus will be felt for decades to come,” says UW–Madison School of Education Dean Diana Hess. “One of Becky’s many strengths was her laser-like focus on the most significant goals and challenges facing the university, while also providing well-informed counsel and advice specific to the many schools, colleges, and divisions. It is because of her courageous and imaginative leadership that our campus is where it is today. I am enormously grateful that I had the distinct pleasure and honor to get to know Becky and extend my deepest sympathy to her family and friends.”
