UW–Madison School of Education’s online graduate programs ranked No. 4 by U.S. News

U.S. News & World Report ranked the UW–Madison School of Education’s online master’s degree programs among the very best in the nation.

According to the news organization’s 2023 Best Online Master’s in Education Programs rankings released in January, UW–Madison is No. 4.

“These rankings are another example of the range of high-quality programs across our School of Education,” says Dean Diana Hess. “Our online offerings help make our School more accessible to learners around Wisconsin, the country, and even the world. Like we do with our highly regarded in-person offerings, our online programs are dedicated to providing an outstanding learning experience and high levels of student support for each individual learner.”

In the Best Online Master’s in Education Programs rankings, Clemson University and the University of Florida tied for the top spot, with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign at No. 3. UW–Madison is tied for fourth with the State University of New York at Albany, and the University of North Texas.

For these rankings, U.S. News used a methodology that rated schools based on five categories. Engagement (with instructors and classmates); Faculty Credentials and Training; Peer Assessment; Services and Technologies; and Student Excellence. U.S. News then selected factors, known as ranking indicators, to assess each program in these categories. (Details on U.S. News and World Report’s methodology is available here.)

The UW–Madison School of Education has long fared well in U.S. News & World Report rankings. In addition to these recently released online master’s program ratings, in March 2022 the news organization ranked UW-Madison as the home of the fifth-ranked school of education in the nation — marking the ninth straight year it has been rated among the top five. In those rankings, U.S. News also rated nine education specialty areas, and UW–Madison’s School of Education was the only school in the nation to have a top-10 ranking in all nine — including the No. 1-ranked Educational Psychology program.
