Works from UW–Madison faculty members Li Chiao-Ping and Kate Corby, and alumna Alice Svetic were selected for the Midwest Regional Alternative Dance Festival (RAD Fest), being presented virtually March 5-7.

This is a juried event based out of the Epic Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and features the best in modern, post-modern, and contemporary dance from all over the country and world.

Li is the Sally Banes Professor of Dance and a Vilas Research Professor with the School of Education’s Dance Department, where Corby is also a professor. Svetic received her undergraduate degree from the Dance Department in 2020.

Li Chiao-Ping Dance will present “Here Lies the Truth,” as part of the festival’s asynchronous Screendance Film Series March 5-7. The asynchronous events will be available from Friday, March 5, through Sunday, March 7, until 9 p.m. CT.  Originally performed in October 2020, the piece explores fake news, facts, and fiction, how we cope with the dissonance that comes from our truth or truths which we may know in our bodies, and asks “Is Truth Dead?” Screendance makers will also participate in a live-streamed panel talk-back/audience Q&A on Saturday, March 6, at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Kate Corby & Dancers’ “dancelikeaman” and Svetic’s “Lullaby” will be presented in the Short Works Professional Performance Series Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6 at 7 p.m. CT.

“Dancelikeaman,” created with long-time collaborators Josh Anderson and Mikey Rioux, explores masculinity and gender identity through the lenses of both a career in dance and the gender socialization of boys. The piece includes text, video, and a toy chest full of vintage He-Man figurines.

Svetic’s “Lullaby” is a solo work representing the desire to return to the past while living more than ever in the present.
