The Wisconsin Union Directorate is hosting a screening of Kevin Shaw’s 2022 film, “Let the Little Light Shine,” on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m., as part of the Havens Wright Center’s 2023 Social Cinema Series. The film will be followed by a discussion with Shaw and UW–Madison’s Erica Turner, an associate professor in the School of Education’s Department of Educational Policy Studies.

“Let the Little Light Shine” tells the story of the parents, students, teachers, and administrators of National Teachers Academy — a high-performing public elementary and middle school in an African-American neighborhood in Chicago — as they fight for the school’s survival when it is threatened to be replaced by a new high school favoring the community’s wealthier residents.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, “Kevin Shaw’s riveting documentary captures the struggle to save NTA through all its highs and lows — introducing us to charismatic young leaders taking a stand to protect their academic futures.”
The screening and discussion are free and open to the public, and will take place in the Marquee theater in Union South (1308 West Dayton Street).
