UW–Madison graduate student to lead ASHE workshop demystifying AI

UW–Madison graduate student Kyoungjin Jang-Tucci, a PhD candidate in the School of Education’s Department of Educational Policy Studies, is leading a workshop at the upcoming Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) General Conference, which will be held Nov. 20-23 in Minneapolis.

The workshop, titled “A Non-Technical and Critical Introduction to Natural Language Processing, Language Models, and Text-Centered Artificial Intelligence,” is designed to demystify how popular text-centered AI tools like ChatGPT “understand” and generate (or imitate) human language. Participants will explore the basics of natural language processing and language models through hands-on experiences, making these concepts accessible to everyone — no technical background required.

This learning opportunity will be especially valuable for researchers considering incorporating generative AI or chatbots into their work, as well as college educators interested in engaging their students in critical reflections about AI usage in and out of the classroom.

The workshop will take place on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hilton Minneapolis. Registration is required.
