Tandem Press honored by Print Center New York

UW–Madison’s Tandem Press will be honored for its significant contributions to the field of printmaking at Print Center New York’s spring benefit on May 11, recognizing the press’s nearly four decades of artistic innovation and collaboration.

A fine art print publisher affiliated with the School of Education’s Art Department, Tandem Press works with internationally renowned artists to produce original print editions. The press is widely recognized for its commitment to experimentation and ambitious print-based projects, while providing students and the public with meaningful access to leading contemporary artists.

Founded by William Weege in 1987, Tandem Press expanded its vision and national reach under the leadership of Director Paula Panczenko, who was appointed in 1989. After 35 years at the helm, Panczenko retired in 2024, and Katie Geha was named director.

“Tandem Press, at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has spent nearly 40 years at the forefront of research and experimentation as a fine art print publisher under Paula Panczenko’s decades-long leadership and new director Katie Geha’s vision for the future,” states the Print Center New York spring benefit webpage.

Geha, who will attend the spring benefit with the Tandem Press team to accept the honor alongside School of Education Dean Marcelle Haddix, emphasized the recognition’s significance. “Tandem Press is deeply honored to be recognized by Print Center New York, whose annual gala celebrates the most influential artists, collaborators, and institutions shaping the field of print today,” she said.

“As the first university press to receive this distinction, the recognition is especially meaningful. We are proud to represent the University of Wisconsin–Madison and to highlight the work of the School of Education on this national stage.”

Geha added that the recognition reflects both the press’s legacy and its continued momentum. “For nearly four decades, Tandem Press has been committed to excellence through collaboration, education, and experimentation. This recognition affirms not only our history, but also the vibrant community of artists, students, and supporters who continue to define and expand what printmaking can be.”

Print Center New York will also honor a former Tandem Press artist-in-residence, Derrick Adams, and HM Queen Sonja of Norway at the spring benefit.

Adams is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the influence of popular culture on the formation of self-image, while also questioning how African American experiences intersect with art history, American iconography, and consumerism.

Geha noted that sharing the occasion with Adams made the recognition especially meaningful. “We have collaborated closely (with Adams) for the past seven years, publishing nearly 20 prints together,” she said. “It is a true pleasure to celebrate this honor alongside a valued friend and collaborator, and to be included in such distinguished company.”
