UW–Madison’s Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) recently traveled to New York City to accept the 2025 Carle Honor from the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.
The CCBC was recognized with the Angel Award, honoring organizations that make possible the creation of illustrated children’s book art exhibitions, education programs, and related projects. The honor was presented at the museum’s annual gala on Sept. 25 at the New-York Historical Society.

The event was covered by Publishers Weekly in an article, “‘Proclaim the Power of the Picture Book!’: Highlights from the 2025 Carle Honors,” which featured remarks from CCBC Director Tessa Michaelson Schmidt, who accepted the award on behalf of the center.
In her remarks, Michaelson Schmidt highlighted the center’s longstanding mission to promote access, inclusion, and diversity in children’s books. “We know, and [teachers and librarians] know, and you know that it matters,” she said.
The Carle Honor recognizes the CCBC’s six decades of leadership promoting literacy, diversity, and access to high-quality literature for children and teens.
