Meri Lau leads a workshop on developing elementary art curricula with UW–Madison art education majors. Lau — a recently retired art teacher from the Madison Metropolitan School District and longtime cooperating teacher — focuses on unit planning, sharing three lessons she designed around the theme “Dogs in Art.” In this moment, Lau walks students through a screen printing activity inspired by Keith Haring’s iconic barking dog imagery.

“I show students how to break the dog into simple shapes so elementary kids can draw it more easily,” Lau explains.

“Screen printing is messy and requires a lot of prep, but it’s worth it,” she adds. “Students love it, and it gives them another way to connect art-making with storytelling.”
