UW–Madison alumna shares insights into her artwork on Fakewhale

UW–Madison alumna Julie Insun Youn was recently featured on Fakewhale, a curated media platform focused on the intersection of technology and art.

In a Q&A, Youn discusses her artistic journey and the concepts central to her work, which blends traditional painting with digital experimentation.

Youn, who earned her MFA from the School of Education’s Art Department in 2011, transitioned from traditional painting to “post-painting” and multidisciplinary digital experiments in 2015. Her artwork, primarily based on stripes, is abstract and seeks to evoke a transient mood through repetition, rearrangement, and overwriting.

In the interview, Youn says she aims to create moments through her artwork where “the self is forgotten at the peak of heightened senses.”

“The concept of ‘selflessness’ emerges from this idea,” she explains. “Art fundamentally suspends everyday life and self-consciousness, leading us to a sense of sublimity and beauty.”
