UW–Madison’s Emily Machado is first author of a new paper for the International Literacy Association.

Machado is an assistant professor in the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She wrote the paper with Paul Hartman, a teacher at Hamline Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois.
The paper, titled “’It Took Us a Long Time to Go Here’: Creating Space for Young Children’s Transnationalism in an Early Writers’ Workshop,” shares how one early literacy teacher, “Paul” (the second author), created space for second graders to explore transnationalism within his primary‐level writers’ workshop.
The authors describe how three children took up Paul’s invitations to compose poetry exploring their own transnational experiences. Ultimately, they argue that early literacy teachers, including those that must follow standardized curricula, have the ability to “create spaces for students to explore and express the fullness of their lives” — including transnationalism — within their classrooms.
